The Outlander Itinerary

Fans of the popular Outlander series know that some of the action for this time-traveling odyssey takes place in upstate New York during the Revolutionary War. Cooperstown is centrally located for excursions to visit some of these important sites. Take a deep dive into the history of everything Fraser with day trips to these places.

Spend your day exploring the history and scenic beauty of this important Revolutionary War battle site. Open for visitation daily from May through October, Fort Ticonderoga offers special tours and programs including Ticonderoga Guns by Night, The Gossip Tour of Fort Ticonderoga, a fascinating Beneath the Fortress Walls tour, and more.

Another great day trip from Cooperstown, a drive to Saratoga Springs provides the opportunity to visit Saratoga National Historical Park, home of the battlefield that became the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Take a self-guided tour by driving or biking the Tour Road, hike the Victory Woods trail which was the site of the British encampment when their forces surrendered. After taking in all of the rich history of the site, explore downtown Saratoga Springs for some delicious dining and shopping!

Of course, there’s plenty of fascinating history to discover here in Cooperstown and Otsego County that will give Outlander fans a fuller picture of the world that the Frasers inhabited. Visitors to Fenimore Art Museum can explore the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, with hundreds of objects that showcase the artistry of indigineous people. Also on site at the museum is a lakeside Haudenosaunee interpretive site featuring a 1790s Seneca Log House and a 1750s reproduction Mohawk Bark House.
A short drive to Cherry Valley brings more fun, and delicious stops to make. Make time for shopping at Plaide Palette, a store specializing in Scottish, Irish, and Welsh items. If you’re feeling hungry, the Tryon Inn is the perfect spot to refuel. During colonial times, Cherry Valley was part of Tryon County, named for Governor William Tryon, who also served as governor in North Carolina. As Outlander fans know, a fictionalized version of Tryon appears in the series as a nemesis for Jamie and Claire.

For more about the Mohawk, visit the Iroquois Museum in Howe. Learn more about the culture that Ian Murray became a part of right in the southern tier of New York State.
